When I was searching for available GE courses for my first ever semester in UP, I was glad to see Philosophy as one of the available courses. I want to take Philosophy courses since I think it would help me think better and inspect situations more critically. So, I decided to take Philo10 as one of my GEs
Of course, as what any newcomer would do, I did research on which Philo10 professors to enlist in. I stumbled upon a post in the internet (although I forgot where) and saw Bernard Caslib Jr. as one of the Philo10 professors of the university. The person said that he had a very wonderful time in his class and even gave a rating of 9999999999/10. As soon as I read this, I asked my friends to also enlist in his class so that I would not be alone in taking up the class (#medyoclingy).
After being with THY2 (our section) and Sir Caslib for one whole semester, I must say that indeed, all of my expectations were met. This class is definitely one of those classes wherein you would not be unchanged once you go out of the classroom. One’s knowledge on almost everything is questioned, and as time progressed, one would soon find himself doubting everything. However, this is not so that we would look like idiots, doubting the existence of everything although they have already been proven. This is needed so that we would all know how these ideas came to be.
One thing that I liked about this class is that Sir Caslib promotes friendship between students. He likes to give group works (but mostly skits) and allow group discussions. I think this is good because one would be able to deliver his opinions freely in class and that others could easily correct one’s wrong answers. Also, who does not want friends outside his course? J
However, if you just want a petiks GE, you should cross this out of your list of probable GEs. Philo10 demands so much from the students. Reading through the texts provided in class is not enough because one should first internalize these ideas and then think of the ‘what if’ and ‘why’ questions, and should be ready to answer them in class. This class demands a student to exercise his/her ability to relate ideas nicely.
Yes, this would appear to be a stressful class, but I assure you, after going through one semester of philosophizing, you would feel smarter than you ever were.
